US HAS DEPORTED 25,000 TO THIRD COUNTRIES UNDER SECRETIVE DEALS – REPORT
The United States has deported about 25,000 migrants to countries other than their own under agreements that have largely remained out of public view, according to a new report.
The report said the deportations involved arrangements with third countries that agreed to receive migrants who were being removed from the United States, raising questions about transparency and the treatment of deportees.
It said some of the countries involved had no direct connection to the migrants being deported, meaning individuals could find themselves transferred to unfamiliar countries after leaving the US.
The arrangements have reportedly been used as part of broader efforts by the US government to expand deportation options and accelerate the removal of migrants who do not have legal permission to remain in the country.
Immigration advocates have raised concerns about the lack of public information surrounding some of the agreements, particularly regarding the conditions migrants face after being transferred to third countries.
The report also highlighted calls for greater transparency over the deals, including information about the countries involved, the number of people transferred and the safeguards in place for deportees.
