JUSTICE MUST NOT BE SOLD TO HIGHEST BIDDER, BISHOP WARNS JUDGES, LAWYERS
The Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, Right Rev. James Odedeji, has warned judges and lawyers against allowing wealth, influence, social status or personal interests to undermine the administration of justice.
Odedeji gave the warning while speaking on the importance of integrity and professionalism within the legal profession, stressing that justice must remain accessible to all, regardless of a person’s financial standing or influence.
He urged judicial officers and legal practitioners to uphold fairness, impartiality and ethical standards in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The bishop said the credibility of the justice system depends largely on the integrity of those entrusted with administering and representing it, adding that personal interests should never take precedence over justice.
He further called on members of the legal profession to resist pressures that could compromise their duties and to remain committed to the rule of law.
Odedeji stressed that a justice system perceived as being influenced by money or status could undermine public confidence in the courts and weaken trust in the rule of law.
