SOWUNMI DESCRIBES PETER OBI AS ‘MASTER OF EMPTY CAMPAIGN’
Convener of the Alternative Movement, Segun Sowunmi, has described Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, as a “master of empty campaign,” while questioning the details behind some of the former Anambra State governor’s policy proposals.
Sowunmi made the remarks while speaking on TVC’s Politics on Sunday programme, where he was asked about the 2027 presidential race and whether the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration had strengthened the campaigns of Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
He said Obi’s political appeal was partly linked to calls for greater equity for the South-East, noting that the region has not produced a president in the current republic.
However, Sowunmi questioned some of Obi’s claims about governance and his record as governor of Anambra State. He also referred to the ongoing debate over the state’s financial obligations under successive administrations.
Turning to Obi’s campaign proposals, Sowunmi criticised what he described as a lack of detail on how some of the policies would be implemented, funded and delivered within specific timelines.
He particularly questioned Obi’s proposal to move Nigeria from consumption to production and his comments on expanding agricultural production, asking how incentives would be provided and how the proposed programmes would be financed.
Sowunmi also argued that presidential campaign promises must take into account the role of institutions such as the National Assembly and the civil service in implementing government policies.
