US, CHINA AGREE TO CREATE ‘COMMUNICATION CHANNEL’ FOR AI INCIDENTS

The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving artificial intelligence, following talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House announced the agreement after the leaders’ summit, describing it as part of broader efforts to improve communication between the two countries over the risks and benefits of advanced artificial intelligence.

The two countries also agreed to establish a US-China “Super Intelligence” dialogue to exchange views on the potential risks and benefits of advanced AI. The White House said the next exchange is expected to take place by November.

The communication channel is expected to provide a direct mechanism for the two countries to communicate when serious AI-related incidents occur, particularly those with potential national security implications.

The agreement follows earlier discussions between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, during which the two sides discussed protocols for communicating about AI safety incidents and identifying major risks associated with increasingly autonomous AI systems.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has also stressed the need for AI development to remain under human control, while both countries continue to compete for leadership in advanced artificial intelligence technology.

The latest agreement represents one of the areas of cooperation between Washington and Beijing despite continuing disagreements over trade, technology and other strategic issues.
