JIGAWA ASSEMBLY RECEIVES CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT BILL, PLEDGES TIMELY ACTION

The Jigawa State House of Assembly has received the 2026 Constitution Amendment Bill transmitted by the National Assembly and pledged to complete its consideration within the stipulated timeframe.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Haruna Dangyatim, disclosed this on Friday during an interactive session with journalists at the Assembly Complex in Dutse. He said the legislature had received the bill and would commence work on it shortly.

Dangyatim said the bill was transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and concurrence as required under Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

He explained that Jigawa lawmakers had been given 30 days from the date of receipt to complete their legislative consideration, assuring that the state would meet the expected timeline.

The Speaker also disclosed that the Assembly had constituted a committee to carefully examine the proposed amendments and make recommendations that reflect the interests of the people of Jigawa State.

The National Assembly had transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, to the state legislatures on September 16. At least 24 of the 36 state Houses of Assembly must approve a constitutional alteration before the process can proceed.

The National Assembly has clarified that the 30-day period given to state assemblies is an administrative timeframe rather than a constitutional deadline, as the Constitution does not prescribe a specific period for state legislatures to communicate their decisions.
