SOWORE RESUMES 2027 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sowore returned on Sunday, September 27, after spending more than 20 months in the United States. He said his prolonged stay abroad was linked to arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.

During his time in the US, Sowore said he engaged with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on the state of the country and his political agenda. He also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.

The AAC candidate said he remained committed to ensuring that Nigerians living outside the country participate fully in Nigeria’s democratic process. He said an AAC administration would pursue the implementation of diaspora voting if elected president in 2027.

Following his return, Sowore is expected to proceed to Abuja, where he will continue attending court proceedings relating to a cybercrime case instituted against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2025.

Sowore said his return also marked the beginning of another phase of his nationwide campaign. He plans to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country as the AAC presents its political, social and economic agenda ahead of the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed Sowore as the AAC’s presidential candidate for the January 2027 election, with Haruna Garba Magashi as his running mate.
