The Federal Government has increased its independent revenue target for 2026 to ₦2.5 trillion as part of efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline, improve public finance, and reduce reliance on oil earnings.
The new target is expected to drive greater efficiency among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) by encouraging improved revenue generation and accountability.
According to government officials, the initiative aligns with ongoing economic reforms aimed at expanding non-oil revenue, enhancing tax administration, and promoting prudent management of public resources.
The government said achieving the target will require stronger compliance with revenue remittance obligations, the adoption of digital revenue collection systems, and stricter monitoring of government agencies.
Officials noted that increasing independent revenue is essential to funding infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, and other critical sectors without placing excessive pressure on public borrowing.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to implementing reforms that will boost economic growth, improve transparency, and ensure sustainable public finances.
The revised target reflects the administration’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal position and build a more resilient economy.
