Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed suggestions that the support of state governors guarantees electoral victory, insisting that his performance in the 2023 presidential election proves otherwise.
Obi noted that despite not having the backing of any sitting governor during the election, he still secured victories in 12 states and recorded millions of votes across the country.
According to him, the will of the people remains more powerful than political structures, stressing that genuine leadership is earned through public trust and not merely through endorsements from political office holders.
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria’s future depends on the active participation of citizens who desire change, accountability, and good governance.
His remarks come amid growing political realignments and discussions about possible alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, where support from governors is expected to play a major role.
The statement has already sparked reactions across the political landscape, with supporters and critics debating the influence of political structures versus popular support in determining electoral outcomes.
