The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has commended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, for ordering the refund of billions of naira traced to the church from an individual suspected of financial crimes.

Olukoyede made the revelation on Saturday, November 7, 2026, while addressing RCCG pastors, ministers and workers during a meeting organised ahead of the church’s annual Holy Ghost Congress.

Recounting the incident, the EFCC chairman explained that investigations into the financial activities of an individual suspected of large-scale fraud uncovered transactions involving funds traced to RCCG projects and accounts.

According to him, after he brought the findings to Adeboye’s attention, the respected cleric was displeased and immediately directed some church officials to ensure that the money was returned within 24 hours.

Although the church reportedly encountered some difficulties in arranging the refund within the stipulated period, the funds were eventually returned to the government, Olukoyede said.

He praised Adeboye’s response as an example of accountability and responsible leadership, stressing that religious institutions must not retain money suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The EFCC boss also warned religious leaders against accepting questionable donations without investigating the sources of donors’ wealth.

He further cautioned against bribery, unhealthy competition and the pursuit of leadership positions through questionable means, insisting that religious titles would not protect anyone involved in financial misconduct.

Responding, Pastor Adeboye assured the EFCC chairman that RCCG would not shield anyone found involved in financial wrongdoing. He also urged pastors to maintain transparent financial records.

Olukoyede reiterated that the commission would continue to investigate and prosecute financial crimes, regardless of the status or religious affiliation of those involved.
