Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, describing it as a “cheap product” that Nigerians are unlikely to accept.
Lawal made the remark while commenting on the political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections and the growing realignment among opposition figures.
He questioned the viability of Atiku’s latest presidential bid, suggesting that the former vice-president’s political record and previous attempts to secure the presidency would make it difficult for him to win the support required to emerge victorious.
Lawal also argued that Nigerians are increasingly demanding a new direction and should carefully assess the records and credibility of politicians seeking their votes in 2027.
His comments come amid intensified political activities among opposition parties and prominent politicians seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next presidential election.
Atiku has remained one of the leading opposition figures in Nigeria and has continued consultations with political stakeholders as discussions over possible alliances and a coalition ahead of 2027 gather momentum.
Lawal’s latest remarks are expected to further fuel the political exchanges among opposition figures as the race for the 2027 presidency gradually takes shape.
