Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount programme, asking what will happen when the intervention expires.
The Federal Government recently announced that petrol sold at NNPC retail stations would be discounted for 30 days, with public transport operators expected to benefit from the initiative.
Reacting to the announcement, Atiku questioned whether the measure would provide lasting relief for Nigerians or only offer temporary support.
Through his media team, Atiku asked, “What happens on Day 31?” while arguing that Nigerians need sustainable solutions to the high cost of living.
He also questioned how much motorists would actually save under the programme and whether reduced fuel costs for transport operators would translate into lower fares for passengers.
Atiku said the government should focus on measures capable of delivering longer-term reductions in transport and food costs rather than relying on short-term interventions.
He further called for policies that would support domestic refining and improve the availability of affordable petrol across the country.
