Former Director of Military Intelligence (DMI), Brigadier-General Kunle Togun (retd.), has accused South-West governors of politicising security issues at a time when the region faces growing threats from kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements.
The retired military officer expressed concern over what he described as inadequate coordination and lack of urgency in addressing the worsening security situation across parts of the region.
According to Togun, security should remain a collective responsibility that rises above political interests, warning that failure to take decisive action could embolden criminal groups.
He urged governors in the South-West to strengthen collaboration with security agencies, traditional rulers, local vigilante groups, and community leaders to tackle emerging threats effectively.
The former intelligence chief also called for improved intelligence gathering, better funding for security initiatives, and a unified regional approach to combating crime.
His remarks come amid increasing concerns over kidnappings, attacks on rural communities, and growing calls for stronger security measures across the South-West.
