Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the continued captivity of abducted schoolchildren in Nigeria, saying Children’s Day celebrations offer little joy while many students remain in the hands of kidnappers.
In his Children’s Day message, Obi lamented the worsening insecurity affecting schools and communities across the country, describing the situation as painful and unacceptable.
According to him, the inability of many children to celebrate safely due to fear, violence and abductions reflects the urgent need for stronger action to protect lives and secure the future of Nigerian children.
Obi urged government authorities and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and prioritise the safety of students and educational institutions nationwide.
He also called for renewed investment in education, child welfare and national security to ensure children can grow and learn in safe environments.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that every child deserves access to education, peace and opportunities without the threat of violence or kidnapping.
His remarks come amid growing national outrage over recent school attacks and abduction incidents in parts of the country.
Civil society groups and education advocates have similarly called for urgent reforms and stronger protection for schools and vulnerable communities.
Children’s Day is celebrated annually in Nigeria to honour children and promote awareness about their rights, welfare and future development.
