Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned Nigerians against a fake Instagram account impersonating him on social media.
In a statement issued by his office, Jonathan disowned the fraudulent account and cautioned members of the public against engaging with or relying on information shared through the page.
According to the former president’s media team, the fake account was created by unknown individuals attempting to mislead people and falsely present themselves as representing Jonathan.
The statement urged Nigerians to verify social media accounts carefully and rely only on official communication channels linked to the former president.
Jonathan’s office also warned that impersonation and the spread of false information on social media could mislead the public and damage reputations.
The development has renewed conversations about the growing problem of fake accounts, online impersonation and misinformation targeting public figures and institutions.
Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly advised social media users to confirm account authenticity before responding to messages, financial requests or political information online.
Supporters of the former president welcomed the clarification, urging social media platforms to strengthen verification and monitoring systems against impersonation.
Authorities continue to encourage responsible social media use and public vigilance against online fraud and misinformation.
