Nigeria has activated an Ebola emergency watch in Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and eight other states following concerns over the deadly Bundibugyo strain outbreak reported in East Africa.
Health authorities say surveillance systems, border monitoring and rapid response measures have been intensified to prevent any possible spread into the country.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) disclosed that emergency preparedness teams and health facilities have been placed on alert as precautionary measures continue nationwide.
Officials urged Nigerians to remain calm but vigilant, stressing the importance of personal hygiene, early reporting of symptoms and avoiding direct contact with suspected infected persons.
Symptoms associated with Ebola may include fever, vomiting, weakness, body pain, bleeding and severe fatigue.
Public health experts warned that rapid detection and immediate isolation remain critical in preventing outbreaks and protecting communities.
Nigeria previously earned international recognition for successfully containing the Ebola outbreak in 2014 through aggressive contact tracing and coordinated public health response.
Authorities also encouraged citizens to rely on verified information from official health agencies and avoid spreading panic or misinformation online.
The emergency watch highlights growing concerns among African health authorities over cross-border disease transmission and regional preparedness.
