A war of words has erupted between Babatunde Gbadamosi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, over waste management and the government’s handling of environmental challenges in Lagos.

Gbadamosi accused the Lagos State Government of allowing the city to become overwhelmed by refuse, warning that poor waste management could worsen flooding and create serious environmental problems for residents.

He criticised the government’s response to the situation and called for more effective waste evacuation, improved drainage systems and practical measures to address recurring flooding across the state.

Responding to the criticism, Wahab dismissed Gbadamosi’s remarks, saying he would not give him the attention he was seeking. The commissioner maintained that the government was working to improve waste management and tackle the environmental challenges facing Lagos.

Wahab also highlighted the scale of the state’s waste management burden, noting that Lagos generates thousands of tonnes of refuse daily. He pointed to investments in waste transfer stations, recycling, composting and other initiatives aimed at improving waste collection and disposal.

The commissioner explained that flooding in Lagos was also linked to the state’s coastal location, tidal conditions and climate change. He maintained that the government was investing in drainage infrastructure and flood-control measures to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.

The exchange has drawn attention to the continuing debate over environmental management in Lagos, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election intensify. While Gbadamosi has questioned the government’s performance, Wahab has defended its efforts and rejected the criticism.
