Portugal have handed Rafael Leão the iconic No. 7 shirt previously worn by Cristiano Ronaldo for their Nations League clash against Denmark following the veteran forward’s departure from the national team camp.

The decision marks a notable moment for Leão, who will wear the famous number as Portugal prepare for their next international fixtures.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp on Wednesday, September 30, after being left on the bench during the team’s 2-1 victory over Norway. The 41-year-old announced his departure following a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and said he would explain his reasons in due course.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had earlier denied reports of a serious disagreement with Ronaldo, although speculation about tensions between the pair intensified after the forward was not used against Norway.

Leão, who plays as a forward for Portugal, now has the opportunity to wear one of the most recognisable shirt numbers in the national team’s history. Ronaldo wore the No. 7 for many years and became one of the country’s most celebrated players.

Portugal’s decision to give Leão the number has attracted attention as the team continues its Nations League campaign. However, it remains unclear whether he will retain the shirt beyond the next two matches.
