The United Nations (UN) and the Federal Government have called for innovative financing mechanisms and stronger partnerships to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before the 2030 deadline.
Speaking at a high-level engagement on sustainable development, representatives of the UN and the Nigerian government stressed that traditional sources of funding alone would not be sufficient to meet the ambitious targets set under the SDGs.
They advocated greater collaboration among governments, the private sector, development partners, financial institutions, and civil society to mobilise resources for critical sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, clean energy, and poverty reduction.
According to the stakeholders, innovative financing models—including blended finance, impact investing, public-private partnerships, and climate financing—are essential to closing funding gaps and driving sustainable development.
They also emphasised the need for transparency, accountability, and efficient use of public resources to maximise the impact of development investments.
The meeting highlighted the importance of strengthening institutions, improving policy implementation, and leveraging technology and innovation to achieve inclusive economic growth and improve the quality of life for citizens.
Both the UN and the Federal Government reaffirmed their commitment to working together with all stakeholders to ensure Nigeria makes significant progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
