SHETTIMA URGES ECOWAS LEADERS NOT TO TAMPER WITH CONSTITUTIONAL TERM LIMITS

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has called on leaders across West Africa to resist the temptation of altering constitutional term limits, stressing that respect for democratic principles is essential for lasting peace and stability in the region.
Shettima made the appeal on Sunday while delivering a speech on “The Future of Regional Integration in West Africa” at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
The Vice-President said adherence to constitutional provisions and democratic governance remains critical to strengthening public trust, promoting political stability, and deepening regional integration among ECOWAS member states.
He noted that constitutional term limits help safeguard democracy by ensuring peaceful transitions of power and reinforcing accountability in governance across the sub-region.
Shettima also urged West African leaders to work together in addressing common challenges, including insecurity, economic development, youth unemployment, and regional cooperation.
According to him, the future of ECOWAS depends on strong institutions, respect for the rule of law, and a collective commitment to democratic values that unite member states.
The summit brought together heads of state and government from across West Africa to discuss regional integration, security, economic cooperation, and other issues affecting the future of the ECOWAS community.
