Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended the governments of Nigeria and Ethiopia for successfully facilitating a prisoner exchange arrangement between the two countries.
Obi described the development as a positive demonstration of diplomatic cooperation and humanitarian engagement, noting that such efforts help strengthen relations and protect the rights of citizens abroad.
However, he expressed sadness over reports that four Nigerians died while in custody before the exchange could be completed.
The former Anambra State governor called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, stressing that the welfare and dignity of citizens must remain a priority regardless of their situation.
According to Obi, governments have a responsibility to ensure that detained citizens receive fair treatment and adequate protection under international standards.
He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased while urging authorities to continue improving consular support and diplomatic interventions for Nigerians facing challenges abroad.
