ADELEKE, SOWORE KICK AGAINST COURT RULING ON PARTY DEREGISTRATION
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore have rejected a recent court ruling concerning the deregistration of political parties, describing the decision as a setback for Nigeria’s democratic space.
The two political figures argued that a vibrant democracy requires the participation of diverse political parties and viewpoints, warning against actions that could limit political competition and citizen representation.
According to them, smaller parties play a crucial role in deepening democracy by providing alternatives to the dominant political platforms and amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups.
Adeleke and Sowore maintained that the ruling could have far-reaching implications for political inclusiveness and electoral participation if allowed to stand without further legal scrutiny.
They called on stakeholders to protect democratic principles and ensure that citizens retain the freedom to associate with political parties of their choice.
The development has sparked debate among legal experts, politicians, and civil society groups over the balance between electoral regulations and the constitutional right to political participation.
