POLICE PROMISE SECURITY FOR NYSC MEMBERS, INEC WORKERS IN 2027
The Nigeria Police Force has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of adequate security during the 2027 general elections.
The assurance comes amid growing concerns over the safety of electoral personnel following reports of kidnapping threats and an alleged plot to attack NYSC members and other INEC ad hoc workers ahead of the elections.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has outlined a security framework for the 2027 polls, focusing on intelligence gathering, specialised training, inter-agency cooperation, technology and community partnerships.
The police framework also prioritises the protection of electoral officials, voters and election materials before, during and after the elections.
Similarly, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed that security agencies had uncovered a plot targeting NYSC members and other ad hoc electoral personnel. He said suspects linked to the alleged plot had been arrested.
Amupitan stressed that the safety of corps members, electoral workers and other commission personnel remained a priority, warning that anyone who threatens or attacks them would face the full weight of the law.
The commission is also strengthening collaboration with security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to identify potential flashpoints and prevent attacks.
The developments come as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, with security remaining a major concern for electoral authorities and stakeholders.
