Nollywood actor Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, has urged Nigerian filmmakers to embrace indigenous stories and quality storytelling as a way of taking Nollywood to a global audience.
Yekini said Nigerian filmmakers do not need to abandon the country’s culture or identity in order to achieve international recognition.
According to the actor, telling authentic Nigerian stories while maintaining high production and storytelling standards can make Nollywood productions attractive to audiences around the world.
He encouraged filmmakers to draw inspiration from Nigeria’s diverse cultures, experiences and traditions while focusing on compelling stories that can connect with viewers beyond the country.
Yekini’s comments come amid growing efforts within the Nigerian film industry to expand the international reach of Nollywood and compete more strongly in the global entertainment market.
The actor said the future of Nollywood’s global appeal lies in combining authentic Nigerian stories with quality production and strong storytelling.
