NIGERIAN BORDERS ALREADY OPEN, PRESIDENCY TELLS ATIKU

The Presidency has dismissed African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s campaign promise to open Nigeria’s land borders if elected in 2027.
The Presidency said the country’s land borders are already open, arguing that there is therefore no need for a future government to make their reopening an electoral promise.
The response follows Atiku’s position that his administration would open the borders as part of measures to boost trade and improve economic activities across the country.
The Presidency maintained that the Federal Government has already taken steps to facilitate legitimate movement of goods and people through Nigeria’s borders while strengthening border security.
The issue of border policy has remained an important economic and political subject, particularly among traders and businesses that depend on cross-border commerce.
Atiku, who is seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, has continued to campaign on policies he says would improve Nigeria’s economy and living conditions.
The Presidency’s latest response adds to the growing political exchanges between the Tinubu administration and opposition figures ahead of the 2027 election.
