MINERS’ DEATH PROBE: TINUBU BACKS INTERIOR MINISTER

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.

Following the President’s directive, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo inaugurated a 10-member independent investigative committee to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The incident occurred on September 17, 2026, after the victims were detained over suspected illegal mining.

The committee is expected to establish the identities of the deceased, investigate their arrest and detention, determine the cause and circumstances of the deaths through medical and forensic examinations, and establish whether negligence, misconduct or other breaches of duty occurred.

Tunji-Ojo said the investigation must be conducted independently and without interference, stressing that no officer found culpable would be shielded. The committee has also been directed to preserve relevant records and evidence and recommend appropriate disciplinary action, compensation where applicable and measures to prevent a recurrence.

The Federal Government has also suspended the Niger State NSCDC commandant and 20 other officers linked to the incident pending the outcome of the investigation. President Tinubu had earlier said that the suspension of officials should not replace a proper determination of criminal responsibility where evidence warrants prosecution.

The independent committee has begun its work and has adopted a plan for the investigation. It is expected to submit its report within two weeks, while members have appealed to individuals and organisations with relevant information to support the inquiry.
