ANAMBRA TO PETER OBI: GOVERNANCE IS ABOUT PEOPLE’S WELFARE, NOT SAVINGS

The Anambra State Government has responded to former Governor Peter Obi’s comments on the state’s finances, saying governance should be measured by its impact on the welfare and living conditions of citizens rather than the amount of money saved by a government.

The state government said the primary responsibility of any administration was to use public resources to improve the lives of residents through infrastructure, social services, economic opportunities and other development programmes.

The response is part of the ongoing exchange between the state government and Obi over the financial record of his administration, including the savings and liabilities left behind when he left office.

Anambra officials have questioned the emphasis placed on financial savings, arguing that accumulated funds should ultimately translate into tangible benefits for citizens.

The government also maintained that public accountability requires transparency over how resources were generated, saved and spent, as well as the obligations inherited by subsequent administrations.

The latest development comes amid growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general election, with Obi remaining a prominent figure in the opposition political space.
