Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has chaired the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture, where stakeholders called for stronger collaboration to ensure credible elections in Nigeria.
The memorial lecture brought together media executives, election officials, policymakers, and civil society leaders to discuss ways of strengthening the country’s electoral process and deepening democracy.
Speaking at the event, participants stressed the importance of transparent elections, an independent electoral commission, responsible journalism, and active citizen participation in building public trust in the democratic process.
Discussions also focused on the role of the media in promoting fact-based reporting, combating misinformation, and educating voters before, during, and after elections.
The lecture honoured the legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, renowned journalist and former governor of Lagos State, for his contributions to journalism, public service, and democratic governance.
Fayemi urged all stakeholders, including political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media, to work together to safeguard the credibility and integrity of future elections.
Participants agreed that free, fair, and transparent elections remain essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring accountable leadership.
