GANI FAWEHINMI FOUGHT TO OPEN NIGERIA’S POLITICAL SPACE — UBA SANI
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has praised the late human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist Gani Fawehinmi, describing him as a key figure in the struggle to expand Nigeria’s political space.
Sani said Fawehinmi dedicated much of his life to defending democracy, social justice and the rights of ordinary Nigerians.
The governor highlighted Fawehinmi’s contribution to Nigeria’s democratic development, noting that the activist consistently challenged injustice and advocated for a more open and inclusive political system.
According to Sani, Fawehinmi’s commitment went beyond politics, as he also supported education and used his influence to promote opportunities for Nigerians, particularly those who faced social and economic challenges.
The governor said Fawehinmi’s courage and determination during Nigeria’s difficult political years remain an important part of the country’s democratic history.
Sani urged Nigerians, particularly younger generations, to remember and learn from Fawehinmi’s commitment to justice, freedom and democratic values.
He said the late activist’s legacy remains relevant as Nigeria continues to strengthen its democratic institutions and promote good governance.
Fawehinmi, who died in 2009, remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent human rights advocates and pro-democracy voices.
