The Federal Government has announced plans to review the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, signalling its commitment to ensuring workers’ salaries remain responsive to prevailing economic realities.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this while addressing labour stakeholders, noting that the government is committed to sustaining dialogue with organised labour on workers’ welfare.
According to him, the review is in line with the government’s promise to periodically assess the minimum wage to reflect changes in the cost of living and the nation’s economic conditions.
Gbajabiamila acknowledged the financial challenges facing many Nigerian workers and assured that the Tinubu administration remains committed to improving their welfare through policies that promote decent work and economic stability.
He stressed that any review of the minimum wage would be carried out through consultations with labour unions, employers, and other relevant stakeholders in line with established legal procedures.
The announcement comes amid growing calls from organised labour and civil society groups for improved wages to cushion the effects of inflation and the rising cost of living.
The current national minimum wage of ₦70,000 was approved in 2024 after negotiations between the Federal Government, labour unions, and the private sector.
