Democracy thrives on accommodating opposing views — Secondus
Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has called on the Nigerian government to respect and accommodate dissenting political views, stressing that such tolerance is essential for a healthy democracy.
Secondus made the remark while expressing concerns over recent political developments, including the treatment of opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
He argued that democracy cannot flourish where opposing voices are suppressed, urging authorities to uphold the principles of freedom of expression and political inclusiveness.
According to him, allowing diverse opinions and constructive criticism strengthens governance and promotes accountability.
Secondus also cautioned against actions that could create the perception of political intimidation, noting that such developments may undermine public trust in democratic institutions.
Observers say his comments reflect growing concerns among opposition figures about the state of political freedoms as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.
