Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani to ensure the release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before the forthcoming Sallah celebration.
In a statement reacting to the situation, Atiku described the development surrounding El-Rufai as disturbing and urged authorities to act in the spirit of justice, fairness and national unity.
According to the former presidential candidate, political disagreements should not be allowed to escalate into actions capable of deepening tension or creating unnecessary division within the country.
Atiku appealed to both the Federal Government and Kaduna State authorities to intervene and ensure that due process and the rule of law are respected in handling the matter.
The statement has generated widespread reactions across political circles, especially given El-Rufaiโs influence within Northern Nigerian politics and his previous role in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political observers say the situation could further intensify discussions surrounding internal political disagreements and shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters of El-Rufai have also continued to call for transparency and fairness, while critics insist that legal and constitutional procedures must take precedence over political pressure.
Neither the Presidency nor the Kaduna State Government had officially responded to Atikuโs appeal at the time of reporting.
The development adds to growing political tensions and realignments currently shaping Nigeriaโs political landscape ahead of future elections.
