MTN Group Chairman Mcebisi Jonas has called on African countries to take greater advantage of the continentβs vast mineral resources and rapidly growing consumer market as global economic and political power shifts towards a more multipolar world.
Jonas said Africa must move beyond simply exporting raw materials and instead develop the capacity to process its resources locally, create jobs and build stronger industries.
He argued that Africaβs enormous mineral wealth, combined with its young and expanding population, gives the continent significant bargaining power in the emerging global economic order.
According to him, African countries must work together to negotiate better deals, attract strategic investments and ensure that the continentβs natural resources translate into sustainable economic development for its people.
Jonas also stressed the importance of strengthening infrastructure, technology and local industries so that African economies can capture more value from their natural resources.
His comments come amid growing global competition for critical minerals needed for industries including renewable energy, electric vehicles, technology and manufacturing.
The MTN chairman urged African leaders to see the continentβs resources not merely as commodities for export, but as strategic assets that can be used to drive industrialisation and strengthen Africaβs position on the global stage.
