Former Senate President David Mark has stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election demonstrated that democracy can thrive in Nigeria without violence or crisis.
Speaking after the primary where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged victorious, Mark praised the conduct of delegates, party officials and aspirants for maintaining order and discipline throughout the process.
According to him, the peaceful outcome of the exercise showed that transparent internal democracy and credible political engagement are achievable within Nigerian politics.
Mark also stressed the importance of respecting democratic principles, party rules and the collective will of party members during political contests.
The former Senate President described the ADC primary as a positive example for other political parties ahead of future elections and primaries across the country.
Political observers say the conduct of party primaries often plays a significant role in shaping public confidence in democratic institutions and electoral processes.
Analysts believe peaceful and transparent primaries could strengthen internal party unity and reduce post-election disputes within political parties.
The ADC primary attracted nationwide attention amid increasing political realignments and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters of the party welcomed Mark’s remarks, describing the exercise as a major step toward strengthening democratic culture in Nigeria.
