The Presidency has confirmed the killing of notorious ISWAP commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, during a joint security operation involving Nigerian and United States forces.
According to presidential officials, Al-Manuki was successfully eliminated during a coordinated counterterrorism operation targeting insurgent activities in the North-East region.
The Presidency also clarified that earlier reports circulated in 2024 claiming the terrorist commander had been killed were based on mistaken identity.
Officials explained that intelligence gathered after the previous operation later revealed that another individual had been wrongly identified as Al-Manuki at the time.
The latest confirmation is being described as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to weaken terrorist operations linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Security authorities noted that Al-Manuki had been linked to several violent attacks and insurgent activities in parts of Northern Nigeria and the Lake Chad region.
The development has generated reactions among security analysts, many of whom see the operation as a significant achievement in regional counterterrorism efforts.
However, experts also warned that insurgent groups may attempt retaliatory attacks or quickly replace key commanders, stressing the need for sustained military and intelligence operations.
Nigeria has continued to collaborate with international partners, including the United States, in intelligence sharing, surveillance and counterterrorism operations aimed at tackling insecurity in the region.
