The Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) has secured the support of the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, for the organisation of the 2026 IGP Judo Championships.
Officials of the federation described the backing as a major boost for the development of judo and combat sports in Nigeria.
According to the NJF, the championship is expected to provide a platform for discovering young talents, promoting sportsmanship and strengthening the growth of judo across the country.
The federation noted that the support from the police leadership would also help improve the organisation, visibility and success of the tournament.
Speaking on the development, stakeholders highlighted the importance of collaboration between sports bodies and security institutions in promoting youth engagement and national unity through sports.
The championship is expected to attract athletes, coaches and officials from different parts of Nigeria, creating opportunities for competition and talent development.
Sports analysts say increased institutional support for local sporting events could help Nigeria improve its performance in international competitions while encouraging more youth participation in athletics.
The Nigeria Judo Federation also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding grassroots development programmes and improving training opportunities for athletes nationwide.
Preparations for the 2026 IGP Judo Championships are expected to intensify in the coming months as organisers work toward delivering a successful tournament.
