OYE TO TINUBU: ECONOMIC GROWTH MUST TACKLE HUNGER, JOBLESSNESS
A former Director-General of the Budget Office, Ben Akabueze, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to ensure that Nigeria’s economic growth translates into better living conditions for ordinary citizens.
Akabueze stressed that economic progress should not be measured only by headline figures, but also by its impact on hunger, unemployment and the standard of living of Nigerians.
He urged the Federal Government to prioritise policies that create jobs, increase household incomes and make basic necessities more affordable.
According to him, sustained economic growth must ultimately improve the welfare of Nigerians and reduce the hardship faced by vulnerable households.
His comments come amid continuing concerns over the cost of living, unemployment and food insecurity across the country.
Akabueze said government policies should therefore focus on ensuring that the benefits of economic expansion are felt by citizens, particularly those struggling with rising living costs.
He called for stronger efforts to create opportunities for Nigerians and ensure that economic reforms deliver tangible benefits to households and businesses.
The remarks add to the growing debate over Nigeria’s economic reforms and whether the country’s reported economic growth is translating into meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
