Nigerian billionaire businessman, , has explained why he eventually abandoned plans to purchase English Premier League club despite years of public interest in acquiring the team.
Speaking during an interview, Dangote revealed that his priorities changed following the massive investment and financial commitment required to complete and stabilise the Dangote Refinery project in Nigeria.
According to Africa’s richest man, the refinery project consumed enormous resources, making it difficult to pursue the acquisition of a major European football club at the same time.
Dangote noted that while he remained passionate about Arsenal and seriously considered buying the club in the past, the opportunity became less realistic as the club’s value and market position continued to rise.
He also explained that Arsenal’s owners have significantly improved the team and strengthened its financial position over the years, making a takeover more difficult and expensive than before.
The businessman had previously expressed interest in purchasing Arsenal after completing the Dangote Refinery, a statement that generated excitement among football fans in Nigeria and beyond.
However, Dangote said his current focus remains on expanding his business empire and ensuring the long-term success of the refinery and other industrial investments.
Arsenal have remained one of the biggest football clubs in the world and have recently re-emerged as strong contenders in English football under manager Mikel Arteta.
The comments have sparked reactions among football fans, especially supporters who once hoped to see the Nigerian billionaire become owner of the North London club.
