TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER WAIVING NEW RUSSIA SANCTIONS AND TARIFFS
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order suspending the implementation of new sanctions and tariffs against Russia.
The decision comes amid ongoing international tensions over Russia’s war against Ukraine and efforts by Washington to increase economic pressure on Moscow.
The proposed measures include sanctions targeting Russian officials, major banks and oil tankers accused of helping Russia transport energy supplies despite existing restrictions.
The legislation also provides for tariffs of up to 100 per cent on goods from major buyers of Russian oil and gas under specified conditions.
Trump said waiving the measures was in the national interest of the United States. The executive order gives his administration greater flexibility over whether and when to implement the additional penalties. However, the decision does not automatically remove existing sanctions against Russia.
The move has drawn criticism from some US lawmakers, who argue that suspending the measures could weaken efforts to restrict Russia’s ability to finance its war against Ukraine. Some supporters of tougher sanctions believe the decision could also raise concerns among Washington’s European allies.
The development comes as the Trump administration continues to weigh its approach to Russia, energy supplies and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The suspension marks a shift in the implementation of the proposed sanctions, although the administration retains the option to take further action.
