SOKOTO MOBILISES 244 WARD LEADERS TO FIGHT MATERNAL, CHILD DEATHS
The Sokoto State Government has mobilised 244 ward leaders across the state as part of a renewed effort to reduce maternal and child mortality through grassroots healthcare advocacy and community engagement.
The initiative is aimed at increasing awareness about maternal health, child nutrition, immunisation, antenatal care, and the importance of seeking timely medical attention during pregnancy and childbirth.
According to state officials, the ward leaders will serve as community advocates, helping to educate families on healthy practices and encouraging women to utilise healthcare facilities for safe delivery and child healthcare services.
The government said the programme is designed to bridge information gaps at the grassroots level and strengthen community participation in efforts to improve health outcomes.
Health experts have long identified poor access to healthcare, delayed medical intervention, and low awareness as major contributors to maternal and child deaths in many rural communities.
Authorities expressed optimism that the involvement of community leaders would enhance public trust, improve healthcare-seeking behaviour, and contribute significantly to reducing preventable deaths among mothers and children.
The mobilisation forms part of broader healthcare interventions by the state government aimed at improving primary healthcare services and achieving better health indicators across Sokoto State.
