Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has reportedly suggested that the naira could exchange at about ₦4,000 to the dollar if the Federal Government reinstated the petrol subsidy.

The remark comes amid ongoing debate over the economic consequences of subsidy removal and the pressure of rising fuel prices on Nigerian households and businesses.

Nigeria removed the petrol subsidy in 2023 as part of efforts to reduce government expenditure and redirect public funds towards other priorities. However, the decision has contributed to higher petrol costs, intensifying calls from some Nigerians for the policy to be reconsidered.

Reintroducing the subsidy could place additional demands on government finances, depending on the structure of the policy and the amount spent on keeping petrol prices below market levels.

The exchange rate is influenced by several factors, including foreign exchange supply and demand, export earnings, inflation, monetary policy and investor confidence. Therefore, the claim that the naira could reach ₦4,000 per dollar under a subsidy arrangement should be understood as an attributed estimate, not a guaranteed exchange-rate outcome.

The debate highlights the difficult choices facing policymakers as they seek to balance government spending, currency stability and the cost of living.
