OWERRI AIRPORT TO CLOSE FOR 25 DAYS AHEAD OF CHRISTMAS
The Federal Government has announced plans to temporarily close the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days to allow for runway rehabilitation and extension works.
The proposed closure is expected to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation by the relevant authorities.
The rehabilitation will involve repairing damaged sections of the runway, treating surface cracks, filling potholes and resurfacing affected areas. Heavy rainfall has reportedly worsened the runway’s condition.
The project will also include extending the runway to improve the airport’s capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, subject to the necessary regulatory requirements.
The authorities say the work is necessary to improve aviation safety and prepare for increased passenger traffic during the Christmas travel season.
Passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure have been advised to contact their airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative arrangements.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is expected to communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once the arrangements are finalised.
