Dani Olmo is preparing for an emotional return to Croatia when Spain face Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday.
The match will take Olmo back to the country where he developed into a professional footballer after leaving Barcelona’s La Masia academy at the age of 16 in 2014 to join Dinamo Zagreb.
Olmo spent six years with Dinamo, progressing through the club’s academy before making his senior-team debut. He went on to score 34 goals in 124 appearances across all competitions before moving to RB Leipzig in 2020.
The Spain international later returned to Barcelona, where he has continued his career with the Catalan giants.
Speaking ahead of the match, Olmo described the return to Croatia as a special occasion, saying the country played a major role in his development both as a footballer and as a person.
He also reflected on his decision to leave Barcelona as a teenager, saying Dinamo’s interest and belief in his potential convinced him that the move was the right choice.
Olmo expects a difficult atmosphere in Split, with Croatia backed by a passionate home crowd. Spain will be looking to maintain their strong position in the Nations League with another positive result.
The midfielder also praised Barcelona and Spain teammate Lamine Yamal, saying the teenager continues to mature and has become an important player for both club and country.
