The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Federal Government, security agencies and other relevant institutions to investigate and prosecute individuals responsible for attacks, harassment and unlawful detention of journalists across the country.

The union said attacks on media professionals undermine press freedom and threaten the ability of journalists to carry out their constitutional responsibility of informing the public and holding those in authority accountable.

The NUJ stressed that journalists must be able to perform their duties without fear of intimidation, physical attacks or arbitrary arrest.

The union also urged security agencies to ensure that anyone found responsible for violating journalists’ rights is brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The call comes amid continuing concerns over the safety of media practitioners in Nigeria, particularly during political activities and public demonstrations.

The NUJ maintained that protecting journalists is essential to upholding press freedom, strengthening democracy and ensuring that citizens have access to credible information.
