NIGERIAN SAMSON ADAMU NAMED CAF GENERAL SECRETARY
Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position since the continental football governing body was established in 1957.
CAF announced the appointment on Sunday, November 1, 2026, following approval by its Executive Committee after a comprehensive recruitment process.
Adamu had been serving in an acting capacity since March 2026, following the resignation of former General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the position was widely advertised and several candidates were interviewed before Adamu was selected.
The CAF president praised Adamu’s experience in football administration, noting that he joined the organisation in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently becoming Director of Tournaments and Events.
During his time at CAF, Adamu played important roles in organising major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, a qualification focused on the administration and management of sports.
As General Secretary, Adamu will oversee CAF’s day-to-day administration and support the implementation of its strategic priorities across African football.
His confirmation is a significant achievement for Nigeria, giving the country representation at one of the most influential administrative levels of African football.
