NDDC SEEKS PROTECTION OF N’DELTA INFRASTRUCTURE

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has urged traditional rulers and community leaders across the Niger Delta to take responsibility for protecting public infrastructure against vandalism and other forms of destruction.

The commission said community leaders have an important role to play in safeguarding development projects established to improve the lives of residents across the region.

The NDDC stressed that infrastructure provided through government intervention programmes belongs to the people and should be protected from activities that could undermine their usefulness or shorten their lifespan.

The commission also called on traditional rulers to mobilise their subjects and work with relevant authorities to prevent the vandalism of roads, bridges, electricity facilities, water projects and other public assets.

According to the NDDC, protecting infrastructure should be a shared responsibility involving government agencies, traditional institutions, community organisations and residents.

The commission said continued destruction of public facilities could undermine development efforts and force governments to spend additional resources repairing projects that should serve communities for many years.

It therefore urged communities across the region to report suspected cases of vandalism and cooperate with security agencies to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
