The Lagos State Government has partnered with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to tackle the growing challenge of indiscriminate roadside refuse dumping across the state.
The initiative is aimed at improving environmental sanitation, promoting cleaner communities, and strengthening efforts to maintain Lagos as a safe and healthy city for residents and visitors.
Under the partnership, members of both transport unions will assist in monitoring public spaces, identifying environmental offenders, and reporting individuals engaged in illegal waste disposal activities.
State officials explained that commercial drivers and transport workers are strategically positioned across various parts of Lagos and can play a critical role in discouraging environmental violations and promoting proper waste management practices.
According to the government, the collaboration forms part of broader measures to address environmental degradation, prevent flooding caused by blocked drainage channels, and improve public hygiene.
Authorities also warned that individuals caught dumping refuse indiscriminately would face sanctions in line with existing environmental laws.
The state government urged residents to embrace responsible waste disposal habits and make use of approved waste collection services rather than disposing of refuse on roadsides, medians, drainage channels, and other unauthorized locations.
Leaders of the transport unions pledged their support for the initiative, assuring the government that their members would actively participate in public awareness campaigns and environmental monitoring activities.
The partnership comes as Lagos intensifies efforts to promote environmental sustainability and enforce regulations aimed at keeping the state clean and free from avoidable environmental hazards.
