JONATHAN, DIRI URGE ACTION AFTER 70 YEARS OF OIL EXPLORATION IN NIGER DELTA

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri have called for urgent and coordinated action to address the environmental and socio-economic challenges facing the Niger Delta after seven decades of oil exploration in the region.
The two leaders made the call during an event marking 70 years of oil exploration in the Niger Delta, stressing that despite the region’s enormous contribution to Nigeria’s economy, many host communities continue to grapple with environmental degradation, pollution, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure.
Jonathan said it was time for stakeholders, including the Federal Government, oil companies, and development partners, to prioritise environmental restoration, sustainable development, and improved living conditions for the people of the Niger Delta.
He emphasised the need for greater investment in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment, noting that lasting peace and stability in the region depend on addressing the longstanding concerns of host communities.
Governor Diri also called for environmental justice, urging relevant authorities and oil operators to accelerate the cleanup of polluted sites and fulfil their obligations to communities affected by decades of oil exploration.
The governor said meaningful development in the Niger Delta requires stronger collaboration among governments, international partners, and oil companies to protect the environment while creating economic opportunities for residents.
Jonathan and Diri maintained that the 70-year milestone should serve as a moment for reflection and renewed commitment to ensuring that the people of the Niger Delta enjoy the benefits of the natural resources extracted from their land.
