Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would restore fuel subsidy if elected President in 2027, while promising to tackle corruption in the management of public resources.
Obi said his approach to fuel pricing would be different from the current system, arguing that government must consider the impact of fuel costs on businesses, transportation and ordinary Nigerians.
He said any subsidy arrangement under his administration would be designed to benefit Nigerians rather than become a channel for corruption and diversion of public funds.
The former Anambra State governor also stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of the country’s resources.
Obi has repeatedly argued that Nigeria should redirect public funds towards productive sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure and manufacturing.
He said reducing waste and corruption would create more resources for government to invest in areas that can improve living standards and strengthen the economy.
The issue of fuel subsidy remains a major subject in Nigeria’s 2027 political debate, with political parties and candidates offering different approaches to managing the cost of petroleum products and the wider economy.
