Nigeria’s health insurance enrolment has risen by 35 per cent, reaching 22 million beneficiaries, in what authorities describe as a major milestone in expanding access to healthcare across the country.
The increase has been attributed to reforms introduced by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), including the implementation of mandatory health insurance and other Federal Government initiatives aimed at achieving universal health coverage.
According to health officials, the reforms have expanded access to affordable healthcare services for millions of Nigerians while encouraging greater participation by states, employers, and healthcare providers.
The government said the growing enrolment reflects increased public awareness of the benefits of health insurance and ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s healthcare financing system.
Officials also noted that the expansion is expected to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses, improve access to quality healthcare, and provide better financial protection for families.
The NHIA reaffirmed its commitment to extending health insurance coverage to more vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and persons living in underserved communities.
The Federal Government said it will continue working with state governments, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to achieve universal health coverage and ensure that every Nigerian has access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
