The Ekiti State Government has urged farmers across the state to prepare for possible heat waves and changing weather conditions linked to the anticipated strong El Niño climate pattern towards the end of 2026.

The warning highlights the potential impact of rising temperatures and irregular weather on crop production, livestock and fisheries, with farmers advised to take preventive measures to minimise losses.

Farmers are encouraged to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices, including planting early-maturing and drought-tolerant crop varieties, conserving soil moisture, improving water management and following reliable weather forecasts.

Livestock farmers are also advised to provide adequate drinking water and proper ventilation for animals, while fish farmers should pay attention to pond water levels, aeration and shade during hotter periods.

The advisory underscores the importance of early preparation and access to timely weather information to protect agricultural productivity and food security.
